Sammy, Speaking in the House of Commons on 5 September during a statement on the Brexit negotiations said ;
I welcome the Government paper on the issues affecting Northern Ireland as a result of the decision to leave the EU. Not only has the Government assured Unionists that the border will not be redrawn along the Irish sea but it has also given assurances to Nationalists that there will be no hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. What is even more important is that the Government has outlined the means by which these promises can be achieved.
It is disappointing therefore that the Irish Government , whose country has much to lose from an EU punishment beating of the UK, has been so negative in its response to this paper. It is important that the Irish Government make it clear that they will not be acceding to the spiteful demand from Gerry Adams that it block any agreement between the UK and the EU over arrangements for cross border trade and movements of people.
